5 Ways To Create A Consistent Workout Routine

Apr 27, 2020

You hear it all the time – healthy habits improve your well-being – and working out is usually at the top of that list. Exercising is important for your physical and mental health, keeps your body’s systems running properly, and fuels weight loss. But, developing a consistent workout routine can be tricky. So, here are 5 simple ways to start implementing a regular workout routine in your life!

1. Know your “why”.

Knowing the “why” behind your workout regimen is the key to maintaining the motivation to stay committed! When you have a reason to exercise, it boosts morale and it’s easier to remain consistent.

Try writing down your “why” or picking a visual stimulant like a picture or quote that reminds you to keep working out, even on the days you don’t want to. Write your “why” on a post-it note and place it on your bathroom mirror or on the outside of your fridge. Just try to choose a place that you will see it consistently! Remember your “why” the next time you need some extra encouragement!

2. Find an accountability partner.

An easy way to stick to your workout routine is to find an accountability partner! Partners are a fun way to keep you on track and provide another source of encouragement! You and your workout buddy can meet up to take a run together or do the same virtual workout together. Get creative! Having an accountability partner is an opportunity to share your workout successes and reach out for support when you need an extra shot of encouragement.

3. Put your workouts on the calendar.

The best way to create a workout routine is to schedule it into your day like you would a work meeting or date. Putting workouts on the calendar requires you to honor the commitment and not back out. I understand that sometimes life happens and schedules shift, so give yourself some grace! But, do your best to schedule workouts for a time of day that works best for you and can be blocked off with no interruptions.

4. Start habit stacking.

Habit stacking is the practice of establishing a new habit by tying it into an existing habit or routine that is already built into your day. This is a simple way to start building a new habit because it reinforces the habits you already have while also helping you develop a new one. Find an activity, practice, or ritual that you do every day and add working out to that routine. Some examples are: working out after you have your morning cup of coffee, heading out for a run after you watch the news, or doing 10 pushups or squats before you shower. This practice can help you establish a regular pattern of working out as you maintain existing routines.

5. Set out or pack your workout clothes out the night before.

The easiest way to remind yourself to workout is to set out your gym clothes or pack them in your gym bag the night before! If you have already set your clothes out ahead of time, you don’t have to worry about that added task before you hit the gym or crush an at-home workout. If you prefer working out at a gym or going straight for a run post-work, try packing the essentials you need ahead of time. Lay your workout clothes out or have your gym bag ready every night before going to bed so that you see them first thing in the morning and serves as a positive reinforcement for you to hit your goals!

Healthy lifestyle changes can be hard, especially establishing a consistent workout routine. However, with the right preparation and resources, you can start creating healthy habits that last.
