"December of 2017, I met with Betsy Johnson because I hated my body and I did not have any energy. What surprised me was that I didn’t realize how poorly I had been eating. She worked one-on-one with me from the beginning, tailoring my eating habits and figuring out meals that would best work for me and my schedule. “I have been an active group fitness instructor for 30 years and a runner for the past 10 years. In 2018, I made the decision to change careers and began working in an office. I was now teaching classes in the morning and rushing to work with very little thought to what or when I was eating. “On my first meeting with Betsy, I told her that I was addicted to sugar. I was exhausted all the time and I had to have a plan that could easily become a part of my life. "I’m a happily married working mom of 2 middle school kids. My weight has never been an issue for me in life. "Same story, 3,731st verse! Try this fad, try that fad- only to be disappointed, frustrated and still overweight! About 5 years ago I was running three miles several times a week and whatever fad diet I was on at the time was mostly working. 40 hit me like a wrecking ball! Nothing worked and I needed help. "For as long as I can remember, I have always struggled with weight. I struggled even more with gaining weight once I started college. As most people know, the freshman 15 is not just a saying, it is a REAL thing!! Between the free desserts that always seems to be available and the fact that it is a social event in college, it can be a struggle to not gain weight. Besides dessert, I always felt like I ate fairly healthy so I became frustrated I was still gaining weight. I remember growing up and being the “healthy family” that never had the junk food at their house. Because of this, I grew up believing that since I didn’t have junk food that I was eating healthy. That misconception is what led to the slow and steady weight gain. This summer was when I realized that I needed to make a life change. When I became uncomfortable in my own skin to the point of feeling self-conscious in everything that I wore and dreaded going to the beach or pool, I knew something needed to change. I realized that I wasn’t just unhappy, but I wasn’t healthy either.
So over the summer, my mom was actually the one who found Betsy’s Instagram page and told me about all of the success stories. "After 16 weeks of physical training and working with Betsy on my nutrition since April 7, it was October 7, 2018 - race day was finally here! I HAD LOST 20 pounds in the process of working with Betsy all the while I was training for my first marathon. After waking up at 5:30 and having my breakfast of 2 slices of Dave’s Killer bread toast, almond butter and a banana, I met my running buddy in the hotel lobby and we were off to the start. A cool rain had settled over the city and was forecasted to be there the majority of the day. We finally crossed the start line and began our 26.2 mile journey through the Windy City. The crowd support in Chicago is unbelievable. It really keeps you going. As I settled into my race, I felt stronger, confident and faster as each mile passed. This was going to be a great race! Pain in my hips and hamstrings settled in around mile 16 but I was not going to let it stop me from running my race. As we got closer and closer to the finish, I felt confident that I was going to finish this race the way I had always wanted it to go. The final turn was up a slight hill and down to the finish line. I was done!! I was a marathoner! And my time was exactly where I wanted it! When I started this process in January I never dreamed it would have ended this way, the way I wanted it to - strong, healthy and confident. A friend of mine told me during this process, “Dream it, then go do it”. And that’s exactly what I did. Working with Betsy over the past five months gave me the confidence to conquer anything I put my mind to! I finished this race and my nutrition journey knowing anything is possible, but I couldn’t have done any of this without my family, my running buddy and Betsy cheering me on every step of the way. After years of yo-yo dieting, I have been all over the scales. I love working out but never saw any impact on my physical body because my diet was just not right! My journey began 7 months before I met Betsy. I had had my second child in two years in November and started an 80 day workout and nutrition program to lose the baby weight that I had gained and to regain my confidence. I pushed myself for 80 days and lost a grand total of 5 pounds. I was frustrated, defeated and eating all of my feelings. “I workout and play tennis about 3-4 hours a day because I’m getting ready for college tennis. This whole year, I’ve been working towards strengthening my upper body and getting leaner so my muscles would show. However, I saw little muscle gain which was disappointing and I felt stuck. "After having knee surgery in December 2015, I ended up in physical therapy for 6 months AND gained 20+ pounds. I was absolutely miserable, inside and out. "For the past few years I’ve been running myself into the ground with training. I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food for most of my life and in order to compensate for that relationship I took my training to the extreme. I weighed in for my third Ironman last year at 155 pounds. By Christmas I weighed 157 which is the most I’ve ever weighed. I was putting in hours and hours of training in order to get that number down, but it’d never budge. If the number didn’t go down, I would skip meals. "On September 24, 2017, I finished my 3rd Ironman competition with a PR time of 13:11:10 in Chattanooga. The great thing about this, or one of the great things, is that I had recently celebrated a 20 lb weight loss leading up to this competition! I had started working with Betsy in June. I was 166 lbs, and knew it wasn’t any fault of health issues, any fault of anything except not eating the way I needed to for my lifestyle. "I first hired Betsy on May 14, 2014. She had my body composition tested and I weighed in at 195.4 lbs which included 46.4 lbs of fat, and 149 lbs of lean muscle. I was already actively working out 5-6 days a week, but could not lose weight. By following Betsy’s nutrition plan of eating 6 times a day with lean protein and complex carbs, I never went hungry. Betsy wanted me to reduce my alcohol intake, but I told her that I enjoyed my wine and beer too much and did not follow her advice. "In 2001, I weighed 230 lbs and lost it over the course of 3 years. 15 years later, after Ironman Louisville, the weight started creeping up. I was training 6-8 hours some days, so couldn’t figure out what was going on. By the end of it I was up to 170, depressed, fatigued, and not really sure where to go. "Everyone knows that having a baby drastically changes your body. But a lot of times, I feel like we use that as an excuse when we're not in shape. My youngest just turned 9, so I definitely couldn't use "post baby body" as an excuse anymore. As I began to get close to the weight I was when I was pregnant with her, I knew I had to make a change. I had tried several fad diets, but what I needed was a lifestyle change, not just a diet. That's when I heard about Betsy. I took the plunge and signed on for 8 weeks of nutritional counseling. "After being pregnant 3 times in under two years my body had been inconsistently up and down with my weight and body fat. When I got pregnant the third time, I put on weight dramatically.
