7 Tips For Staying Healthy During A Crisis

Apr 23, 2020

Maintaining healthy practices during a crisis isn’t usually the first thing on your mind, but is necessary to keep your immune system strong. The things you do for yourself during a crisis, especially maintaining your nutrition, can leave you feeling stronger than ever. You don’t have to sacrifice your healthy lifestyle during this season, just follow these 7 simple tips to stay healthy!

1. Drink lots of water.

Get hydrated! Not only does your body need hydration to stay operational and fight off illness, but drinking water will also help curb unwanted cravings when you are stuck at home and in a munchy mood. Be sure to drink water from a sanitary water bottle or cup and clean it regularly.

Try creating a new habit to stay hydrated by adding an alarm to your phone every other hour to drink a full bottle of water. You can add lemon, fruit, or drink seltzer water if you want to spice it up without adding loads of additional calories.

2. Have a designated family snack stash.

Everyone knows that snack attacks are going to hit when you are stuck at home. That’s why having a defined snack station filled with ready-to-go healthy snacks is the best approach. You will be less likely to eat something you are not supposed to or deprive yourself of a boost of fuel when you really need it when there is a set area filled with snacks.

If you need a snack, get one! Just make sure those snacks are nutritious. Try supplying a snack bowl in your house full of fruit, or make these energy bars to have at the ready when the munchies hit.

3. Make nutrient-dense meals.

The last thing your body needs during a health crisis is to be deprived of nutritious foods. Eating foods high in antioxidants and vitamins like C and E can help boost your immune system. Try purchasing a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables, protein, and healthy fats to avoid burnout and increase immunity. Meals are essential to keeping the natural routine of your healthy lifestyle, so don’t ignore what you’re eating! Lost on what to cook? 4. Wash your produce before eating it.

Unwanted bacteria, viruses, and harmful substances can live on your produce, often out of sight and out of mind. Be sure to use warm water and wash your produce before eating it to get rid of any unwanted substances.

Don’t forget to wash the produce you plan on peeling too. The substances found on the skin can still get into the food and later your body. Stay safe and wash your fruits and veggies!

5. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

Sleep is the number one thing you can do for yourself to stay healthy during a crisis. Sleep helps your body repair and defend itself, doing most of the work while you are sleeping. Try setting a routine so that you go to bed at a consistent time each night and get between 7-9 hours of sleep. Don’t oversleep though. This can leave you feeling less motivated, groggy, and more likely to eat unhealthy foods.

6. Sanitize all surfaces, all the time.

Everything that you touch needs to be cleaned consistently, from reusable grocery bags to your phone, workout equipment, water bottle, and car keys. Often, the things you use in your day-to-day life might not be the items you clean regularly, so it’s helpful to wipe down these items as you go through your day. Each time you use an item, clean it.

7. Stay active.

Keep your body moving to boost immunity! If you can go for a walk or run in an unpopulated place and social distance yourself, do it. If you are quarantined in your home, staying active doesn’t have to be ruled out for you either. I have this awesome at-home workout that you can do anywhere, anytime!
