The (Healthy) Scoop on Seafood

Eating fish is a great way to add flavor, variety, and a healthy boost to your diet. It’s a great source of lean protein and The American Heart Association recommends you eat fish at least two times a week. Eating fish is a great way to stay on track with your health goals while enjoying a tasty dish!

Learn more about the health benefits and some of my favorite ways to prepare fish below.

1. The Health Benefits of Eating Fish

Fish are packed with nutrients not commonly found in an average diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are a healthy type of fat that your body needs for optimal function and are found in many types of fish.  They are also linked to lowering triglyceride levels in the blood, which can put you at risk for stroke and heart disease.

Vitamin D is another important nutrient fish can add to your diet. Many people are Vitamin D deficient, and as a result are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Several positive functions of Vitamin D include boosting the immune system and aiding in the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is crucial in fighting diseases and aiding bone health.

2. Choosing The Best Fish To Eat
With a wide variety of fish available, it can be hard to know which type to choose! Salmon is considered one of the healthiest fish options you can eat and there are many flavor combinations to experiment with. Try mixing up your salad routine by topping it with salmon rather than chicken. Another non-white fish option is mackerel. Mackerel has a different flavor profile that is slightly oilier and is rich in healthy fats.

Another healthy fish option is cod. Cod is often thought of in the traditional fried dish “fish and chips”. But, try preparing cod grilled or blackened rather than fried for a healthy meal. Mahi Mahi is a popular fish that is light, tasty, and packed with nutrition. You can prepare mahi mahi many ways, but I promise you have not lived until you have tried mahi mahi tacos with pico de gallo!

During your next grocery store visit, check out the fish section for a new healthy addition to your meals! Most grocery stores carry a great selection of fresh fish that is ready for you to cook at home.
